Generous Barber Southsea Offers Half-Price Haircuts to Show Gratitude for Key Workers
Andrei Budai, young passionate barber Southsea is hoping to thank key workers and boost his business with his discount hair-cutting scheme.
Barber Southsea Battling Back After COVID-19 Closure, Offering Discounts to NHS Staff and Carers
Silky Smooth Barbers, a popular barbershop in the UK, has struggled during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the shop owner, Andrei, losing money, customers, and all of his staff when the salon was forced to close in March. Despite these challenges, Andrei is determined to bounce back and is offering discounts to NHS staff and carers as a way to show appreciation for their hard work during the pandemic.
The 36-year-old shop owner, who is officially recognized as a British Master Barber, said:
“They have been fighting this virus every day for months, it’s the least we can do. Unfortunately, clapping for them does not help to pay their bills. A small discount even for a haircut will help more than just a gesture, that’s for sure. I think the government should step up and increase the NHS and carers staff wages for all the efforts and things that they are doing for us.”
During the lockdown, Andrei was forced to close his salon for 103 days, which had a significant impact on his business. Despite these setbacks, Andrei remains optimistic about the future and is excited to face the challenges that lie ahead. He hopes that by offering discounts to key workers, he can not only show his appreciation for their hard work, but also help to support them during these difficult times.
Overall, Andrei’s decision to offer discounts to key workers is a heartwarming gesture that highlights the importance of supporting those who have been working tirelessly during the pandemic. It is a reminder of the sacrifices that these individuals have made in order to keep our communities safe, and a testament to the resilience and determination of small business owners like Andrei.
Southsea Barbershop Owner Gets Inspired by 'Eat Out to Help Out' Scheme
Silky Smooth Barbers, located in Albert Road, Southsea, has been offering free haircuts to the homeless since 2018. The community efforts of owner Andrei have even been recognized by The News with a We Can Do It award. Recently, Andrei was inspired by the government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme, which gave diners half-price meals at restaurants on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays throughout August to support the hospitality sector and protect jobs. As a result, Andrei decided to offer half-price haircuts at his barbershop in Southsea to show support for key workers and encourage people to visit their local barbershops.
According to Treasury figures, the Eat Out to Help Out scheme has been a success, with over 100 million meals claimed. Andrei hopes that his gesture will have a similar impact and bring people through the doors of Silky Smooth Barbers in Southsea. He recognizes the hard work and dedication of key workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and wants to do his part to support them.
Andrei, who is officially recognized as a British Master Barber, said, “They have been fighting this virus every day for months, it’s the least we can do. Unfortunately, clapping for them does not help to pay their bills. A small discount even for a haircut will help more than just a gesture, that’s for sure. I think the government should step up and increase the NHS and carers staff wages for all the efforts and things that they are doing for us.”
In addition to offering discounted haircuts to key workers, Andrei has continued to provide free haircuts to the homeless as a way to give back to his community. Silky Smooth Barbers in Southsea is not only a place to get a quality haircut, but it is also a place where Andrei and his team show compassion and support for those in need.
British Master Barber Offers Discounts to NHS and Carers to Show Support and Gratitude
Andrei, a highly respected British Master Barber, has expressed his deep gratitude and admiration for the tireless efforts of healthcare workers and caregivers during the COVID-19 pandemic. He recognizes that while applause and appreciation are important, they do nothing to alleviate the financial struggles that these key workers face. To show his support, Andrei has decided to offer a small discount on haircuts for these selfless individuals.
Furthermore, Andrei believes that the government should do more to recognize the vital role that these workers play in our society. He calls on authorities to increase the wages of NHS and carers staff to reflect the sacrifices they are making on a daily basis to keep us safe and healthy. It is the least we can do to show our appreciation for all that they do for us.
Barber offering free haircuts for homeless people in Portsmouth
Portsmouth barber Andrei Budai, owner of Silky Smooth Barbers in Southsea, has dedicated the past two Monday evenings to providing free haircuts to homeless individuals as part of a larger project run by local churches
Andrei, who has been at the shop on Albert Road since June last year, said he had seen other barbers across the world offering the same and wanted to follow suit. The 33-year-old said: ‘In America, a lot of barbers have offered free haircuts to homeless people.‘As the number of homeless people in Portsmouth has increased, I, a Portsmouth barber, wanted to find a way to contribute to the community and help those in need. That’s when I came up with the idea of offering haircuts as part of this project.
Every Monday, Andrei a British Master Barber in Portsmouth, offers homeless people a free haircut. Father Marcin started bringing them to the shop to get their hair cut. This is only the second time the barber has done this, but they have already had quite a few people come in for haircuts. Most homeless individuals want all of their hair cut off, while others also want their beard trimmed. The barber is happy to accommodate any style the homeless people want. The barber feels that offering free haircuts is a good way to help the homeless people in the city, rather than just giving them money that could be spent on other things.
‘Father Marcin, from St Swithun’s Church in Southsea, comes to get his hair cut here and I was speaking to him about it.
‘Every Monday, the church offers homeless people somewhere to sleep so this month Father Marcin started bringing them to the shop to get their hair cut.
‘This week is only the second time I have done but we’ve had quite a few turns up.
‘Most of them want all of their cut off and others also want their beard trimmed, I do whatever style they want.’Andrei felt offering the free haircut was a good way to help the homeless people in the city rather than just giving them money that could be spent on other things.
He added: ‘This way I can give them a service they need but might not want to spend money on.‘It also gives them the chance to socialize and speak to someone like myself.‘You can see the joy on their faces afterwards and the difference it makes to them.‘I can see how much they appreciate it.
’The haircut scheme is part of a wider project being run by seven churches in Portsmouth. It offers homeless people the chance to sleep in a different church hall every night of the week. It has spaces for 10 people who have to check into the day service before being referred.
Lisa Butler, from St Swithun’s Church on Waverley Road, said the community has been really supportive in offering food and other services. She said: ‘Portsmouth has offered an amazing response.’
“Church Collaboration with Portsmouth Barber Brings Relief to Homeless”
The scheme is a unique initiative that is being run by seven churches in the city of Portsmouth. These churches have come together with the goal of helping the homeless population in their community. The scheme offers homeless people the opportunity to sleep in a different church hall every night of the week. This provides a safe and warm place for individuals to rest their heads, and gives them a sense of stability and structure that they may not have otherwise.
The project has space for more than 10 people, who must first check in at the day service before being referred to the overnight accommodation. This ensures that the spaces are being used effectively and are going to those who need them the most.
The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with many people offering to donate food and other necessary items to support those participating in the scheme. Lisa Butler, from St Swithun’s Church on Waverley Road, stated that the community has been very supportive in offering these services.
The haircut scheme is just one aspect of the wider project being run by the churches in Portsmouth. They are dedicated to providing support and assistance to those in need, and are constantly seeking new ways to make a positive impact on the lives of the homeless individuals in their community. It is heartwarming to see such a compassionate and caring effort being made to help those who are facing difficult circumstances.

Stories and advice to help your hair & beauty business
COVID has devastated thousands of people’s lives and businesses and has brought many industries to their knees.
The hair and beauty industry was no exception to this.
In April 2020 hair salons and barbers were one of the first to shut their doors to their clients before the initial lockdown, making a good haircut for lockdown a rare commodity.
Amidst the challenges faced by the professional hairdressing industry, the government extended a lifeline through financial support in the form of grants, reaching up to £9,000. However, for a multitude of professionals, this assistance proved insufficient to weather the storm and ensure their survival.
‘Before the pandemic, I had four staff working in my shop and then it was just me’, said Andrei.
‘We were all asking in the industry ‘How are we going to get through this and survive, do I need to sell the shop? Luckily, I didn’t have to go down that path, I’m still here but I know many colleagues who had to sell their business so it came down to how well-established you were to survive.
‘For my business, I felt the support from the government was good, luckily it was enough to survive and pay the bills, but it was harder for some barbers because if they don’t own their business and only rely on their clientele for a reliable income’.
As a result of the lockdown, millions of people have been cutting and styling their own hair.
Andrei has observed a noticeable shift in this pattern following the reopening, although he doesn’t perceive it as a significant concern. According to him, “People have taken to trimming their own hair, resulting in fewer customers visiting the salon. As a long-term strategy, we need to exercise patience and focus on attracting new clients since we no longer see as many familiar faces as we did before.” Post the relaxation of lockdown measures, the hair and beauty industry faced the arduous task of rectifying the aftermath of people’s self-administered “lockdown haircuts.” Nonetheless, Andrei firmly believes that there are no genuinely disastrous haircuts as long as there is hair to work with, offering his assistance to salvage any situation.
‘I also think that a good haircut is so important to people’s mental health and confidence, it could be the difference between turning your camera on or off for a zoom call.
‘ I always encourage people to be proactive in their business, barbers selling the equipment to people to cut their own hair could be a natural thing and a good part of retail for shops, however, you need good knowledge about the equipment -but our priority will always be cutting hair for you.
“There are no bad haircuts, just happy accidents”
Andrei’s top tip:
‘My advice to others in the industry would be to get more efficient with your costs like online marketing, engage with free social media instead of flyers and advertising which costs huge amounts of money and try to keep your regulars with newsletters -cut costs, be efficient, be cautious, be humble and spend as little as you can!’.
Of course, the health and beauty industry isn’t just about skin fading and tidying up beards.
